Incredible scenes for Skeggs ahead of Asian Open

THE British pair go in to tomorrow’s Asian Open in fine form after good final rounds on both courses.

Oliver Florence recorded a 34 and a 37 and Richard Skeggs a 36 and a quite remarkable 32.

It is thought similar scores over the next three days will put the Brits right up near the top.

The day will remembered though for scenes of wild celebration in the evening as the minigolf world came together to mark Skeggs’ birthday.

Staff at the Hello! Minigolf Club dimmed the lights, turned up the music and brought out a huge cake, while competitors flocked to wish him many happy returns.

He also received gifts from Japan and Iran and a large cocktail.

Skeggs said: “It was an unforgettable moment when the lights went down and the happy birthday song came on.

“The cake was paraded through the clubhouse and everybody was clapping.

“It was quite extraordinary – the kindness of the Chinese has been fantastic and I am honoured to be here.”

Earlier, each team gathered on the island in front of the waterfall with their country’s flag for the official photocall.

Florence and Skeggs then completed their preparations for the big day tomorrow, which starts at 9am with the opening ceremony.

Each team will parade around with their flag before the first day of the competition gets underway at 10.30am

The event is due to be streamed live on a travel channel and the tournament organisers are preparing for the Chinese media to descend on the club.

In the last few minutes the groups for the opening round have just been announced.

Skeggs will tee off at 10.36am with Mr Tianyuandong from Japan and American Shay Ellott, while Florence starts 12 minutes later with the Chinese pair of Mrs Yeaiyuan and Mr Zuowenzhi.

“I don’t really know a lot about my playing partners and I’m not even sure if I’ve met them,” said Florence. “I will be concentrating on my own game though and I’m confident that I can do well.

“The last few days of preparation have gone very well and now I just have to follow my notes and cope with the pressure.”

Florence and Skeggs are now heading outside after a meal of peppered beef to play in the Richard Skeggs Birthday Invitational.

Sato Kazuya, Kanai Takayuki and Wakano Hiromi from Japan have been invited.

The competition will be played over six holes – on a course of the Japanese players choosing.

Tee off is 9pm and spectators are welcome.

Team kit is required for all training sessions! Wouldn’t want to be disqualified at this late stage now!

Tim – I’ve taken photos of all the holes. I’ll get them over to you when I can.
