Florence targets home success at Masters

OLIVER FLORENCE has been tipped for minigolf glory after his first tournament top-20 finish.

The Walton-based novice shot 15 holes-in-one with his new German putter on his way to 19th place at the English Open in Bristol last month.

He beat several top British Minigolf Association tour players including Great Britain international Richard Gottfried – a player who has been an invaluable source of help and advice for Florence during his debut season.

And now the British number 16 says the 28-year-old has a great chance of picking up his first tournament win at the British Masters in New Malden later this month.

A disappointed Gottfried, who finished four shots behind the young pretender, said: I thought that Oliver played very well, and his new putter and specialist minigolf balls seemed to help him out.

“It’s good to see new players coming through and pushing the veterans to keep improving too.

“Good luck to Oliver in the British Masters, he should do well there as it’s his home course.

“Unfortunately I’m not playing in it, so it gives him a great opportunity to win it.”

Florence, who finished 29th in his debut tournament in January, was pleased with his performance but admitted he still needed to improve his consistency.

“I was delighted with the number of aces over the 54 holes but I need to cut out the threes and fours.

“I also scored a five during my second round which felt like a bereavement of sorts.

“I’m now looking forward to the Masters on my home patch with the aim of finishing as the top novice in the field.”
