Sand and sausages as Asia gets new course

Skeggs tees off at Asia's newest course

ASIA has a new minigolf venue after the British pair of Richard Skeggs and Oliver Florence built a course from scratch.

The one-hole course – made entirely from sand – was constructed in around an hour with a bucket and spade on Shek O beach in Hong Kong.

It featured three sand castles and a volcano with the cup at the top.

The plastic shovel then doubled up as a putter, with a less than round plastic football used as the course ball.

The creation attracted huge interest from locals and a dog, with one girl unable to wait until it was finished before giving it a go.

She enjoyed it so much that she later returned to feed the course designers sausages on a fork.

Once the course was completed, Florence and Skeggs competed in the three-hole Shek O Beach Minigolf Challenge.

With both players carding rounds of 10 (+4), it was left to Skeggs to beat his rival by one shot in a play-off.

Earlier however, it was Florence who came out on top at the Shek O Obstacle Golf Course.

Plans to compete for the Minches were quickly scrapped upon arrival after seeing the quality of the concrete holes but in a friendly nine-hole round there was a comprehensive eight shot win for Florence, who shot a 11-over-par 29.

Florence commented: “The Shek O Obstacle Golf Course wasn’t really up to standard as it was in very poor condition.

“I managed one ace putting through a big castle but other than that there were some very big scores on nearly all the holes.

“When we got to the beach we decided we could do better so set to work with a spade and a bucket, which I managed to negotiate a discount on as it was slightly damaged.

Florence enjoys success on the obstacle golf course

“I don’t think our course will ever get to stage the Asian Open, mainly because of the tide, but it certainly was the finest minigolf venue in Hong Kong.”

Following their game, the pair carved out a sign in the sand saying “free minigolf” and left the equipment for others to enjoy.

Next stop was The Peak Tram to take in some spectacular views of Hong Kong.
